ADHD AND EXECUTIVE FUNCTION

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that goes far beyond the well-known symptoms such as hyperactivity and forgetfulness.  It is a multi-faceted and complex condition that often involve difficulties with executive functioning, emotional-regulation, and social skills. While it might be tempting to think that individuals with ADHD can overcome their challenges by simply trying harder, the reality is much more intricate.  â€‹â€‹â€‹

COMMON STRUGGLES OF CHILDREN WITH ADHD:

EXECUTIVE FUNCTION

  • Inflexibility

  • Difficulty thinking ahead and planning

  • Easily distracted 

  • Difficulty starting and finishing tasks

  • Difficulty recalling and following multi-step directions

  • Difficulty staying on track

  • Disorganized/messy room, locker, etc.

  • Tendency to lose things

  • Impulsivity

  • Poor time management ("time-blindness)

EMOTIONAL REGULATION

  • Frequent ”meltdowns”

  • “Black or white” thinking

  • Rigidity and need for control

  • Prone to sudden outbursts

  • Difficulty handling frustration/irritations

  • Resistant to anything new/unfamiliar

  • Tend to focus on the more negative aspects of a task or situation

  • Physical aggression when not getting their way

SOCIAL SKILLS

  • Difficulty sharing and taking turns

  • Easily bored and distracted during conversations

  • Difficulty understanding how they come across to others 

  • Bossy or controlling

  • Struggles in unstructured social situations

  • Difficulty reading tone/body language

  • Sensitive to perceived criticism (Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria)
